David: Question: Immigrants to the Midwest found a number of new woods that were easy to work with hand tools. What wood did they call "white walnut"?
(b) Osage orange
Answer: (a) Butternut
Walnut and butternut trees are close botanical cousins. Their figure looks almost identical, but butternut is a much softer wood. Carvers love it. Butternut trees are currently threatened by a lethal canker, so this wonderful wood may not be commercially available much longer.
My answer was Sassafras.
